Updated October 2026 by the Go Mobile repair team
A slow computer is usually caused by too many startup programs, a nearly full drive, malware, overheating or an old hard drive. Restart, remove startup programs, free up space and run a security scan first. If it is still slow, Go Mobile in Charlotte diagnoses the cause for a free quote. Replacing an old hard drive with an SSD often makes the biggest difference.
The most common causes
- Too many programs at startup fighting for memory.
- A drive that is almost full, which slows Windows down.
- Malware or adware running in the background.
- Overheating from dust and a worn fan, which makes the processor slow itself down.
- An old spinning hard drive, which is far slower than a modern SSD.
- Too little memory (RAM) for how you use the computer.
What to try first
- Restart. Use Restart, not Shut down, so Windows fully reloads.
- Cut startup programs. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, open the Startup apps tab and disable programs you do not need at startup.
- Free up space. Go to Settings > System > Storage and use the cleanup recommendations. Aim to keep at least 15 to 20 percent of the drive free.
- Run a security scan. Open Windows Security and run a full scan.
- Install updates. Check Windows Update and restart when asked.
Signs of overheating
A fan that runs loudly all the time, a case that is hot to the touch, or a computer that shuts down on its own are signs of overheating. Dust buildup and dried thermal paste are common causes. Do not block the vents, and keep laptops on a hard surface.
Upgrades that make a real difference
- SSD upgrade: moving from a hard drive to an SSD can make startup and programs open dramatically faster.
- More memory: helps if you keep many tabs and programs open at once.
- Cleaning and new thermal paste: helps a computer that slows down when it gets hot.
Not every computer can be upgraded. Some laptops have memory soldered to the board. Your technician checks your model during the free quote.
