First charge the iPhone for 30 minutes, then force restart it. If it rings, vibrates or answers Siri while the screen stays black, the display has likely failed and needs replacing. If it does nothing at all, connect it to a computer and use Update in recovery mode, which reinstalls iOS without erasing your data. If none of that works, it is usually a hardware problem.
Step 1: Charge it and force restart
Plug the iPhone into a wall charger with a cable you know works and leave it for at least 30 minutes. Then force restart: on iPhone XR and every iPhone since iPhone 8, press and release volume up, press and release volume down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.

Step 2: Is the phone on behind the black screen?
- Call the phone. Does it ring or vibrate?
- Flip the ring/silent switch or press the Action button. Do you feel a vibration?
- Hold the side button and ask Siri something. Does it answer?
If the answer is yes, the iPhone is working but the display is not. That usually happens after a drop or pressure on the screen, and the fix is a screen replacement.
Step 3: Try recovery mode, choosing Update
- Connect the iPhone to a Mac or a Windows PC with iTunes or the Apple Devices app.
- Do the force restart button sequence, but keep holding the side button past the Apple logo until the recovery mode screen appears.
- On the computer, choose Update, not Restore. Update reinstalls iOS and keeps your data.
If the computer detects the iPhone, the problem is often software and Update can fix it. Only choose Restore if you have a backup, because Restore erases the phone.
Signs it is a hardware problem
- The phone was dropped, bent or got wet before the screen went black.
- It rings or vibrates, but the screen stays black.
- The computer does not detect it at all.
- It gets hot while charging but never turns on.
