No iPhone is waterproof. Since the iPhone 7, iPhones are water resistant: the iPhone X is rated IP67 (1 meter for up to 30 minutes), and recent models are rated IP68 at up to 6 meters. Water resistance wears down over time. Apple’s standard warranty does not cover liquid damage, while AppleCare+ covers accidental damage, including liquid, for a service fee.

iPhone 6s and older have no official water resistance rating.
What IP67 and IP68 really mean
The ratings come from lab tests in still, fresh water. They do not cover pool chlorine, salt water, soap, hot showers, pressure from jumping into water, or drops that crack the glass. The seals also wear down with age and after a repair.
Treat water resistance as protection against splashes and accidents, not as permission to swim with your phone.
Does warranty or AppleCare+ cover water damage?
- Apple standard limited warranty: does not cover liquid damage.
- AppleCare+: covers accidental damage, including liquid damage, for a service fee.
- iPhones have liquid contact indicators inside the SIM tray slot or the phone that change color after contact with water.
If your iPhone got wet
- Wipe it off and turn it off if it is acting strangely.
- Do not charge it until it is completely dry. Recent iPhones show a liquid detection alert in the port.
- Do not use rice or a hair dryer.
- If it was salt water, a pool or a drink, or it is not working right, bring it in as soon as you can.
