Close the Camera app, switch between the front and rear cameras, and restart the iPhone. Check that the camera is not blocked by a case or restricted in Screen Time, and update iOS. If only one camera stays black, or the flashlight also stops working, the camera module is likely damaged and needs repair.
Quick fixes to try first
- Close the Camera app fully by swiping it away in the app switcher, then open it again.
- Switch cameras. Tap the flip button to see if the front camera works while the rear one does not, or the other way around.
- Remove the case and clean the lens with a soft, dry cloth.

- Update iOS in Settings > General > Software Update.
Check Screen Time and app permissions
- Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps and make sure Camera is turned on.
- If the camera is black only in one app, such as Instagram or WhatsApp, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera and allow that app.
Test the camera in another app
Open FaceTime or the Magnifier and see if the camera works there. If every app shows black, the problem is likely hardware. If only the Camera app is black, it is more likely software, and an update or a settings reset may fix it.
Signs the camera is damaged
- One camera works and the other stays black.
- The flashlight is greyed out or does not turn on.
- You see cracks in the camera glass, or the picture is blurry, shaky or has spots.
- The problem started after a drop or water exposure.
In these cases the camera module or the camera lens usually needs replacing.
